Five Ways Courageous Leaders Stand Up for Dignity
It is a rare leader who calls out nonsense in a culture in which conspiracy theories and lies have become prevalent.
Yet when a leader has the courage to stand against injustice and inequity, it gives others the courage to do so as well. These principles are never out of fashion, nor are they exclusive to politics. Instead, they are principles that show we value the personal dignity of others.
Dignity is the innate worthiness in every human being.
And humility requires deep regard for the personal dignity of others. When we recognize the inherent value of others, we more easily spot injustice and inequity. Humble leaders can see when others’ dignity is being violated.
Leaders are in a unique position to change organizational culture and attitudes.
Let people know you will not tolerate infringement of others’ dignity by speaking up when you see racism, misogyny, gender bias, and hatred. And purge the organization of those who do not acknowledge the self-worth of others. Employees will appreciate your leadership and be emboldened to uphold such a standard of respect.
It is not enough to merely notice injustice and inequity we need to act.
So, how does an effective leader advance dignity? Here are five important ways:
Never settle for rumors or one side of a story: find ground truth.
Never allow disrespectful behavior or language to go unchecked: nip it in the bud.
Always investigate complaints of harassment or intolerance and deal with it fairly.
Promote an organizational culture that recognizes and supports the personal dignity of every employee, customer, and supplier.
Perhaps the most difficult: have the courage to sacrifice your own success for what is right for others.
Character is measured by the concern we display for others and not mere self-interest.
